Annapurna Temple – The Goddess of Nourishment in Varanasi

Located near the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Vishwanath Gali, Maa Annapurna Temple is one of the revered temples of Varanasi. Dedicated to Goddess Annapurna, the divine embodiment of food, nourishment, and abundance, the temple holds a special place in the spiritual life of Kashi.

The name Annapurna comes from Anna meaning food and Purna meaning complete or abundant. According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Parvati took the form of Annapurna to remind Lord Shiva and the world of the importance of food and nourishment. Her image is traditionally depicted holding a golden ladle and a vessel of food, symbolizing generosity and sustenance.

The temple is also known for its rich architectural and cultural heritage. It was established in the 18th century and features traditional Hindu architectural elements. A major attraction is the Annakut celebration after Diwali, when the temple is beautifully decorated and offerings of food are presented to the Goddess.
